Polar Summer is back with two new Videos
I know it has been a while since I last made a post. But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t have any shows. I had two in the past 4 months, one in October and the other in November. One was at Mühlkeller where a friend recorded “Held” and “Elefant” (check them out at the bottom of this post).
Another show at Mühlkeller: How a sinking mic left me unimpressed
I was at open stage night at Mühlkeller for the second time now. It was fun. Someone recorded it, which is why you can now watch it on Youtube. I really enjoy singing there. The atmosphere and the people are great. I can also recommend Mühlstraße e.V. ‘s other events. It is a unique location.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy the videos (bottom of this post). You will probably notice how the mic sank in “Elefant”. Well… when it comes to interrupting a song, I really don’t like to do it, especially as the cons definitely outweighed the pros in this case due to the small location. People could hear me perfectly. So I continued, probably to the technician’s amazement. But hey, that is what I learned in school. Whether it was performing in the choir, by myself in front of the class (playing the flute or singing) or on stage during a play, I learned it is the best thing to continue if possible. I am 100% sure if I had been on a large outdoor stage, I would have decided otherwise, but in that show it seemed like a good option. Comment if you agree or disagree.
What Elefant and Held are about and why I am doing this
I wrote “Held” (engl: Hero) first, I believe. It was while I was in the kitchen of my old apartment back home in Bamberg. I suddenly had an impression for a song. It’s always in these moments that I can’t find something to write on. The next best thing I could find was an empty cereal bar container. I ripped it apart very poorly and scribbled as fast as I could. And that’s how “Held” was born. It deals with finding purpose, working together with others, admitting mistakes and rising up to become the person you are and want to be. Everyone is capable of achieving something great. First, it is “I”, then it builds up to “you” and then “we”. Everyone is needed.
Then, I am also sure many of us have known a heartbreaker in disguise of an “Elefant”. This song is definitely the product of a great disappointment I experienced about someone I knew back in 2013. I was hurt and with this song I kind of licked the wounds. I’ve always liked fables. It was the only thing I liked to translate back when I had Latin in school. Impersonifications of animals is an interesting means when it comes to the effect it has on recepients. However, with this song, I have kind of turned it upside down. I wanted to create something paradox.
First, the love between an elefant and a raven is very unique itself. Second, who would suppose an elefant to being mean and breaking the hearts of many?
It wouldn’t be a fable without the lesson in the end: Pay attention to what is happening around you and whom you are getting closer with, that is how to avoid pain. It is not about avoiding love or people, it is about avoiding the wrong people. False love can happen to anyone. Even smart ravens.
Both “Elefant” and “Held” are rather old songs (around 2012 or 2013 I believe). I still enjoy singing them as I do with many of my songs. There are many songs that I have written over the years and I would like to share them with everyone. It gives me good feelings. I see how others feel good to or relate to the words. Music, poetry and other arts open unique windows of expression and communication. And this is why I am doing this.
